Google AI Overviews and Local Search: What Changed

By Shannon Scott, Roarpoint · · 4 min read

For a long time, local search on Google followed a familiar pattern. Someone typed "HVAC repair Birmingham," saw a map with a few businesses, scrolled through some links, and picked a company to call. That pattern still exists, but something new now sits on top of it.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode write answers directly in Search. For local businesses, this changes what it means to be visible. Here is what changed, using a heating and cooling company in the Birmingham, Alabama area as the example.

What AI Overviews and AI Mode are

AI Overviews are the short AI-written summaries that appear at the top of many Google results. AI Mode is a more conversational way to search, where people can ask follow-up questions and get longer AI-written responses.

Both are huge. At I/O 2026, Google said AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, and AI Mode has over 1 billion monthly users. Google also says AI Overviews are available in 200+ countries and territories and 40+ languages.

Consumer research reflects this. The BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found Google AI Mode was used by 23% of consumers for business recommendations.

Change one: the answer comes before the list

Previously, a customer compared options. Now, many customers read a summary first. If that summary describes the kind of company they need and names a few options, the comparing may be over before they ever reach the map or the links.

For a local HVAC company, this means the goal is broader than ranking. You want Google's AI to understand clearly what you do, where you do it, and why people trust you.

Change two: reviews are being read differently

BrightLocal found that use of Google reviews slipped from 83% to 71%. That does not mean reviews matter less. It means people are reading them in more places and through more tools. BrightLocal also found that 88% of AI users fact-check reviews cited by AI, and 97% of AI users sometimes double-check AI recommendations against real reviews.

So a customer might see your company in an AI answer, then check your reviews on Google, Yelp or Facebook before calling. BrightLocal notes AI tools can't see inside Google's reviews, which is why it recommends a "Reviews Everywhere" approach. Strong, recent reviews across several platforms support both the AI and the human double-check.

Change three: consistency carries more weight

AI-written answers combine information from many sources. The SOCi 2026 Local Visibility Index found that AI assistants synthesize signals across Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook and brand websites, and that inconsistent or incomplete listings reduce AI confidence.

SOCi also found that AI can be much more selective than the classic map results. ChatGPT recommended just 1.2% of brand locations, compared with an average 35.9% appearance rate in Google's local 3-Pack. That finding is about ChatGPT, not Google, but it shows how AI answers tend to narrow the field.

Change four: website owners got new controls

Google has given site owners more say. As of Aug 31, 2026, Search Console has a control that lets website owners choose whether their site appears in and grounds generative AI Search features, rolled out to all websites worldwide. It also includes reporting on appearances in AI responses.

For most local service businesses, opting out would mean giving up a major place customers look. The more useful step is to use the new reporting to understand where your site is already showing up in AI responses.

Change five: Search is starting to book for people

Google I/O 2026 also announced agentic booking for local services in Search, rolling out to US users. In simple terms, Google is working toward helping people take the next step, like booking an appointment, without the customer doing all the legwork.

Imagine a homeowner in Homewood whose AC quits on a hot afternoon. Instead of calling five companies, they ask Search for help, and Search helps line up a service visit. Which businesses get considered will depend on how clearly and accurately they are represented, and how ready they are to respond.

AI answers are not always right

Google is clear that AI responses may include mistakes. If an AI Overview describes your business incorrectly, the usual cause is unclear or conflicting information somewhere online. The fix is to correct the source and keep it consistent.

What a local business should do now

    • Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current, including services, hours and service area.
    • Make sure your name, address and phone match across Google, Yelp, Facebook and directories.
    • Earn reviews on multiple platforms and respond to them.
    • Publish a clear page for each main service and each area you serve.
    • Answer common questions in a visible FAQ section and support it with schema markup.
    • Check your Search Console reporting on AI appearances if you have access.
    • Search for your own services in AI Overviews and AI Mode and note what appears, with dates.
    • Be ready to respond quickly when a customer reaches out, since AI can send them to you at any hour.

    The bottom line

Local search did not disappear. It gained a new front door. The map pack and website still matter, but the AI-written answer increasingly decides who gets considered first.

Roarpoint AI Visibility helps local businesses with exactly this foundation: listings management, review monitoring and responses, dated AI prompt checks, and map-grid local ranking reports. No one can guarantee placement in AI Overviews, but clear, consistent and well reviewed businesses give Google every reason to describe them accurately.
